prosperous people the responsibility to meet the needs of such poor people. Therefore, Allah Almighty has made Zakat obligatory upon the wealthy, so that they may help those who are poor through this. In this way, wealth will continue to reach the needy instead of being restricted to just the well-off members of society, and thus, economic balance is developed and maintained. Remember! If Allah Almighty wanted, He would have made everybody rich and none would be poor, but His Divine Will has made some people rich and others poor, so that Allah Almighty may test the rich ones through their wealth and the poor through their poverty. Relating to this, it is stated in the Holy Quran:
وَ هُوَ الَّذِیْ جَعَلَكُمْ خَلٰٓىٕفَ الْاَرْضِ وَ رَفَعَ بَعْضَكُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجٰتٍ لِّیَبْلُوَكُمْ فِیْ مَاۤ اٰتٰىكُمْؕ-
And it is He Who made you vicegerents on earth and (O people! He) has raised one over the other in ranks amongst you, in order that He may test you with what He has bestowed upon you.
[Kanz-ul-Iman (translation of Qur’an)] (Part 8, Surah Al-An’aam, Verse 165)
Regarding this verse, Sadr-ul-Afaadil ‘Allamah Maulana Sayyid Mufti Muhammad Na’eemuddin Muradabadi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه has said: ‘i.e. He makes you undergo tests and trials and observes how grateful you are after gaining a high status, blessings and wealth, and how you treat one another.[1]
