A Spring Gushed Forth from the Strike of his Blessed Heel

Manifestations of the divine Power of Allah Almighty are reflected in the sacred being of the merciful Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. Allah Almighty granted him countless miracles, which not only demonstrated the truth of his Prophethood, but also became a source of human compassion and everlasting guidance for faith and spiritual enlightenment. Let us reflect upon one such blessed miracle:

Abū ālib states:

I was once with my nephew, [the noble Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم], in Dhū al-Majāz (a place situated approximately one farsakh (about three miles) from Arafah, where markets were held during the pre-Islamic era). Suddenly, I felt an intense thirst and said to him, “Nephew, I am extremely thirsty.” I said this only out of desperation and restlessness, not because I saw any water with him.

He [the beloved Prophetصَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم ] dismounted from his animal and said, “Uncle, are you truly thirsty?” I replied, “Yes.” Then, he struck his heel upon the ground—or upon a stone—and recited something, and in that instant, I found myself standing at a flowing spring. I had never seen water like that before. He said, “Drink.” I drank until my thirst was quenched. Thereafter, he struck the stone again with his heel, and it returned to its original state.[1]

سُـبْحٰـنَ الـلّٰــه ! Striking the ground or a stone with his blessed heel and causing a spring to flow is one of the magnificent miracles of the final Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. From this event, we learn several lessons:

1.One should strive to alleviate the distress of others to the best of one’s ability and means.

2.By the grace of Allah Almighty, the blessed servants of Allah accomplish tasks that lie beyond ordinary human capability.

3.At times of difficulty, help may arrive from sources unimaginable—this is a special mercy of Allah Almighty.

4.Allah Almighty grants honour and power to whomsoever He wills; they can accomplish great tasks without any apparent means.

5.Witnessing such events strengthens one’s conviction that Allah is All-Powerful, and that the pious are indeed His chosen servants.

6.The righteous help others in a manner that does not cause embarrassment and ensures ease in achieving the task.

7.Acts of kindness that bring comfort to the heart are remembered and cherished forever.

8.A virtuous person is one who benefits others.

9.Water, or any other useful resource, should neither be wasted nor left unused without purpose.

10.In times of hardship, reciting prescribed litanies and offering supplications proves beneficial and brings relief by the grace of Allah Almighty.
