The Night of Salvation
The beloved and final Prophet, Sayyiduna Muhammad صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said:
اِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ، فَقُومُوا لَيْلَهَا وَصُوْمُوْا نَهَارَهَا
“When it is the fifteenth night of ShaꜤbān, spend its night in worship and fast during its day.”[1]
Dear children! Allah Almighty has designated certain nights in the year that are filled with immense blessings and mercy. These nights are not like ordinary nights; the reward for worship performed in them is multiplied. For instance, there are special events in our Madrasah where happiness is shared, and gifts and prizes are given out. Allah Almighty has appointed some special nights during which He grants special mercy and grace to His servants.
For example, in the blessed month of Ramadan, there is the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr), which is better than a thousand months. Similarly, the fifteenth night of ShaꜤbān is known as Laylat al-Barāˈah—the Night of Salvation—when decrees of forgiveness and pardon are granted. In the month of Rajab, the twenty-seventh night is called Laylat al-MiꜤrāj, during which the noble Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was taken to the heavens, beheld Allah Almighty, visited Paradise, and witnessed Hell.
Such great nights carry numerous religious and worldly benefits. For instance, supplications made in these nights are accepted; Allah Almighty forgives the sins of His servants; it is an excellent time to pray for lawful sustenance; and the reward for good deeds is multiplied many times. Through worship, Allah Almighty becomes pleased, and one attains the strength to refrain from sins.
The term Laylat al-Barāˈah means “The Night of Salvation,” signifying that on this night, many servants are granted freedom from Hell. Who exactly is freed from Hell is known only to Allah Almighty. What is necessary upon us is to value this night, worship abundantly, and strive to please Allah Almighty.
Dear children! Laylat al-Barāˈah is a special gift from Allah Almighty. Do not let this night pass in heedlessness. According to your age and ability, engage in as much worship as you can. Perform a little worship but with sincerity, and make a firm intention to continue such good deeds regularly.
Children’s Activity for the Night of Salvation:
On this blessed night, boys should perform the ꜤIshāˈ prayer in congregation, and girls should pray with their mothers at home. To attain the blessings of this sacred night, even if you do not perform much, offer at least two units of voluntary prayer. Recite as much of the noble Quran as possible, supplicate to Allah Almighty for your needs, supplicate for your and your friends’ good marks, seek forgiveness for your mistakes, and recite abundant salutations upon the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. If possible, observe a fast during the day, as this is encouraged in the Hadith mentioned earlier—thus acting upon the blessed saying of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to read, understand, and act upon the blessed Aḥādīth.
اٰمِیْنْ بِجَاہِ خاتَمِ النَّبِیّٖن صلَّی اللہُ عَلَیْہ ِوَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ
