No Pious Deed is Small

No Pious Deed is Small

Allah's Beloved and Final Prophet, Sayyiduna Muhammad صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوۡفِ شَیْئًا which means, "Do not consider any pious deed insignificant."[1]

A pious deed is a good action, an action that pleases Allah or benefits people, such as offering prayers, sending blessings upon the Prophet, and obeying your mother and father, etc.

Every pious deed is liked by Allah Almighty. When we do a good thing, Allah Almighty becomes pleased, and our hearts find peace. People also give us respect. A pious deed makes us a better and more dignified person.

Dear children! A pious deed is like a flower. If we sow a small seed, it can grow into a beautiful flower. Similarly, a small pious deed can also open the path to Paradise for us through the mercy of Allah.

No pious deed is small, nor should we ever consider a pious deed to be small. For example: if you remove a rock from the road, someone will be saved from tripping and falling. If you greet someone with a smile, it will bring joy to their heart, and you will get reward. If you do a small favour for your mother and father, brother or sister at home, they will make dua for you. If you send Salat upon the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, the mercy of Allah Almighty will descend upon you.

These are all small deeds, but in the sight of Allah Almighty they hold great value.

The Companion of the Messenger, Sayyidunā Abdullāh ibn Umar رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَا would go to the market and greet every shopkeeper, poor person, and acquaintance. He would neither buy anything nor speak to anyone; he would only offer greetings. One day, Sayyidunā ufayl رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ asked him: "Why do you go to the market? You neither buy anything nor stop at any shop." Sayyidunā Abdullāh ibn Umar رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَا replied with a smile: "We go only to offer greetings. We greet everyone we meet."[2]

This teaches us that our pious predecessors would spend their time and effort even for a small pious deed like greeting someone, because they knew that even this small pious deed is very valuable in the sight of Allah.

My dear children! You too should keep trying to perform even the smallest pious deed. Do not waste your time on useless things. Instead, if you spend your time on pious deeds, your heart will feel joy, and the mercy of Allah will descend upon you. Have the intention to do one small pious deed every day. If a child is doing a pious deed, do not consider him insignificant or look down on him, because the blessed hadith mentioned at the beginning also teaches us this.

May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to perform both small and big pious deeds.
