Objectives and Wisdoms behind the Revelation of the Holy Quran (Part 01)

Objectives and Wisdoms behind the Revelation of the Holy Quran (Part 01)

The noble Quran is the final divine Book of Allah Almighty, revealed to the beloved Prophet It is not merely a book; rather, it is a complete code of life for humanity, a source of guidance, and a message of mercy. At numerous places in the blessed Quran, Allah Almighty has mentioned the wisdoms and objectives behind its revelation. Sometimes the words نزّل and اَنزل are used, while elsewhere آتینا and other terms of bestowal are employed to clarify these purposes. These objectives are so comprehensive and universal that they encompass every aspect of human life. Below is a detailed exposition of these aims and wisdoms in light of the noble Quran:

Guidance and Direction towards the Straight Path

The most fundamental and paramount purpose of the revelation of the noble Quran, as stated in the blessed Quran itself, is guidance for humanity. Allah Almighty declared in Surah al-Baqarah:

That exalted Book in which there is no doubt; guidance for those who fear Allah.[1]

Likewise, along with the mention of the month of Ramadan in Surah al-Baqarah, it is stated:

The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was sent down; guidance for people and clear directions and the Criterion;[2]

Further, it is mentioned in Surah Yūnus:

O people! Indeed there has come to you sincere advice from your Lord and a cure for what is in the chests; and guidance, and mercy for the believers.[3]

These blessed verses clearly affirm that the core purpose of the noble Quran is to lead mankind from the darkness of misguidance into the light of guidance. By nature, a human being seeks the truth, yet satanic whispers, selfish desires, and negative environmental influences may lead him astray. The noble Quran is the radiant light of guidance that determines the path of salvation, in every era, every society, and for every individual. The noble Quran provides guidance for both personal and collective life. When societies distance themselves from Quranic guidance, disorder, depravity, and misguidance arise; whereas, when its teachings are implemented, society moves toward peace, stability, and progress.

Distinction and Judgment between Truth and Falsehood

Another significant objective of the Quran’s revelation is the demarcation of truth and falsehood and establishing decisive judgment. Allah Almighty states in Surah al-Furqān:

The Possessor of Infinite Blessings is He Who revealed the Criterion to His chosen one that he becomes a warner for all the worlds.[4]

Similarly, in Surah Āl-Imrān:

He sent down this Book of Truth (the Holy Quran) to you, confirming the Books of the past, and He revealed the ˹original˺ Torah and the ˹original˺ Gospel. prior to this, providing guidance for people and He (Allah) sent down the Criterion.[5]

The Quran is called الفرقان because it draws a crystal-clear line between right and wrong in all matters — not only in matters of creed, but also in morality, social dealings, economics, governance, and every sphere of life. In the modern world, where relativism overshadows absolutes, the noble Quran provides definitive and categorical standards. It protects humans from wandering in confusion and guides them towards certainty. When this distinction is lost in society, ethical anarchy emerges; while adherence to Quranic principles constructs a morally sound social order.

Glad Tidings for the Believers

The noble Quran has also been revealed to give good news and joyful assurances to those who believe. Allah Almighty declares in Surah Banī Isrāˈīl:

Indeed this Quran guides to the path which is the straightest and gives glad tidings to the believers who perform righteous deeds that there is a great reward for them;[6]

Similarly, in Surah al-Nal:

And We have revealed this Book to you which is a clear statement of everything, and guidance, and mercy, and glad tidings for the Muslims.[7]

These verses indicate that the noble Quran is not only a warner but also a source of hope, instilling reassurance into the hearts of believers. When a believer recites the noble Quran and acts upon its commandments, he receives glad tidings of Allah’s pleasure, the bounties of Paradise, and everlasting success. These affirmations generate determination and optimism in the heart. When a person becomes weary from the trials and hardships of life, these Quranic promises rejuvenate him. When despair spreads in society, the noble Quran motivates believers towards positive thinking and righteous conduct.

Warning and Admonition for the Disbelievers

Another purpose of the Quran’s revelation is to caution the rejecters and frighten them with punishment. As mentioned in Surah ā-Hā:

˹Dear Beloved Prophet,˺ We did not reveal this Quran to you that you may be burdened. It is but advice for the one who fears ˹his Lord˺.[8]

Likewise, in Surah ā Mīm al-Sajdah:

So if they turn away, then say, “I warn you of a thunderbolt, like the thunderbolt of ʿĀd and Thamūd.”[9]

Similarly, Surah al-Furqān also contains this theme:

The Possessor of Infinite Blessings is He Who revealed the Criterion to His chosen one that he becomes a warner for all the worlds.[10]

This admonitory aspect of the noble Quran is extremely important, as it alerts people of their ultimate end. Those who turn away from the commandments of Allah Almighty, deny His signs, and persist in oppression and corruption are warned by the noble Quran of punishment in this world and the Hereafter. Indeed, the warning is itself a part of Allah’s mercy, for it grants an opportunity for repentance and self-reform.

The accounts of past nations and the punishments that befell them are narrated so that later generations may take heed. When evils spread in society and people violate moral boundaries, the Quranic warnings call them to accountability. This warning is not merely intended to frighten—rather, it is an endeavour to save humanity from destruction.

Comfort and Tranquillity of the Hearts

Among the noble objectives of the blessed Quran is the provision of inner peace and serenity for the believers. Allah Almighty states in Surah al-Rad:

Those who believe and their hearts attain contentment through the remembrance of Allah. Pay heed! Only through the remembrance of Allah do hearts attain contentment.[11]

In Surah Yūnus it is mentioned again:

O people! Indeed there has come to you sincere advice from your Lord and a cure for what is in the chests; and guidance, and mercy for the believers.[12]

These verses make it clear that the Quran is healing for hearts and nourishment for souls. When a person recites the Quran, reflects on its meanings, and acts upon its commandments, a unique sense of peace and tranquillity fills the heart—a calmness that cannot be attained through anything else in the world.

In today’s world, where mental illnesses, depression, anxiety, and stress are widespread, the Quran’s spiritual healing is profoundly effective. The holy Prophetصَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said:

“Indeed, this Quran is the banquet of Allah, so learn from His banquet as much as you can.”[13]

When a society strengthens its connection with the noble Quran, qualities such as patience, gratitude, reliance upon Allah Almighty, and contentment flourish within individuals—qualities that empower them to face life’s challenges with resilience and hope.
