A Child Became Blind in One Eye

A Child Became Blind in One Eye

According to reports, a friend of the father of a three-year-old child visited their home and started taking photos of the child with a mobile phone camera. Before taking the photo, he forgot to switch off the camera’s flash and took the picture from a distance of only ten inches. Half an hour later, tears began to flow from the child's eyes, and the parents noticed that the child was having difficulty seeing.

The child was immediately taken to a doctor, and after examining him, the doctor said that because of the camera’s bright flash, the child became blind in one eye. Doctors say that if a camera flash hits a child's eye from a close distance before the age of four, it can severely damage the macula in the retina. This creates a very high risk of permanent vision loss, and this condition cannot be cured. Up to this age, the macula in a child's eye is not fully developed; therefore, it cannot tolerate intense light. Doctors have advised people to make sure that the camera’s flash is switched off before taking photos of children under the age of four; otherwise, the child could become blind for the rest of their life.

My dear Islamic brothers! One of the problems caused by mobile phones is the habit of taking photos at the wrong time. Nowadays, almost everyone has a mobile phone; therefore, whenever people get the chance, they take a photo or record a video of someone, regardless of whether the other person consents or not.

This habit becomes particularly inhumane when a bomb blast, road accident, or another tragedy occurs. Instead of helping transport the deceased and assisting the injured, people at the scene become occupied with taking photos or videos. This is undoubtedly a heartless act. If those who do this, Allah forbid, became victims of a tragedy themselves, and people were busy recording those moments instead of helping them, how would they feel?

Another harm of taking photos with mobile phones is that it can lead to various health problems. For example, it has become increasingly common for parents, relatives or friends to take photos of children immediately after birth and upload them to social media. At first glance, this seems harmless, but the above-mentioned incident shows that doing this can sometimes cause serious harm, especially if the camera flash is on.
