A Brief Introduction to Khawājah Gharīb Nawāz رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه
The honourable name of Khawājah Gharīb Nawāzرَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه is Ḥasan. He is najīb al-ṭarafayn, one of the Prophet’s descendants from both his father’s and mother’s lineage, being of both Ḥasanī and Ḥusaynī descent.
Among his well-known titles are MuꜤīn al-Dīn, Khawājah Gharīb Nawāz, Sulṭān al-Hind, and ꜤAṭāˈ al-Rasūl.
He was born in 537 AH in the region of Sijistān (south eastern Iran and south western Afghanistan). In search of Islamic knowledge, he travelled to many countries and cities, including Syria, Baghdad, and Kirman. He benefited from the company and teachings of many saints, among whom were his spiritual guide, ꜤUthmān al-Hārūnīرَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه , and the Crown of the Saints, Shaykh ꜤAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه.
During his visit to the Ḥaramayn, he was granted the spiritual guardianship (wilāyah) of India from the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم himself.[1]
Searching for a murshid (spiritual guide)
At the age of 15, Sayyid MuꜤīn al-Dīn رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه embarked on journeys for the acquisition of knowledge. This began in Samarqand, where he memorised the noble Quran and commenced his formal studies of the religious sciences. As he progressed, his passion for knowledge only grew stronger. In total, he spent five years in Samarqand and Bukhara acquiring religious knowledge.[2]
