Surah Taha Ayat 94 Translation Tafseer

Para 16 - قَالَ اَلَمْ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

20.94

قَالَ یَبْنَؤُمَّ لَا تَاْخُذْ بِلِحْیَتِیْ وَ لَا بِرَاْسِیْۚ-اِنِّیْ خَشِیْتُ اَنْ تَقُوْلَ فَرَّقْتَ بَیْنَ بَنِیْۤ اِسْرَآءِیْلَ وَ لَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِیْ(94)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

He (Hārūn) said, “O son of my mother! Do not hold my beard nor (the hair on) my head.[1] I feared that you would say, ‘(O Hārūn) You have divided the Children of Israel, and you did not wait for my word.’”[2]

Commentary

Prophet Mūsā عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام assumed that Prophet Hārūn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام had not been strict enough with the Israelites in the matter of worshipping the calf; it is for this reason that he عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام became angry and held the hair and beard of Hārūn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام pulling him toward himself. Prophet Hārūn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام then responded. Note: This action of Mūsā عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام was by no means to degrade Hārūn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام, rather, this occurred on account of the severity of his wrath which was for the sake of Allah Almighty; this action of Prophet Mūsā عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام cannot be objected to.

Prophet Hārūn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام attempted to prevent the nation from unlawful deeds, but besides a few thousand people, the rest remained stubborn upon their misconduct and opposed him. Thus, keeping the sensitivity of the situation in mind, he عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام parted from them and remained silent until the return of Prophet Mūsā عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام; meaning he عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام exerted his best efforts to prohibit the people and nothing less, and this is what the Divine command requires. Therefore, this does not fall under leniency (Mudāhanah), as this means to not exert all efforts to prevent an action that [in this case] opposes the Shari’ah in one’s presence.
