Sunnahs and Etiquettes of Recitation

Dear Islamic brothers! Let us have the privilege of listening to a few Madani pearls regarding the Sunnahs and etiquette of recitation. First, observe two sayings of the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم: (1) He صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: “Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Judgement, it will come as an intercessor for its companions.”[1] (2) He صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: “The most superior worship of my Ummah is the recitation of the Quran.”[2]

1. It is a Sunnah to recite the Holy Quran in a beautiful voice and with distinct stages.[3]

2. It is commendable (Mustahab) to recite while in a state of Wudu, facing the Qiblah, and wearing good clothes.[4]

3. It is commendable to recite “اَعُوْذُ” at the beginning of the recitation, and it is a Sunnah to recite “بِسْمِ اللہِ” at the start of a Surah; otherwise, it is commendable.[5]

4. Reciting the Holy Quran by looking at the text is superior to reciting it from memory.[6]

5. Two thousand good deeds are recorded for reciting the Holy Quran by looking at the text, and one thousand for reciting from memory.[7]

6. It is commendable to weep at the time of reciting the Holy Quran.[8]

7. When the Holy Quran is recited aloud, it is obligatory upon all those
