In What State Did You Begin Your Morning?

Book Name:In What State Did You Begin Your Morning?

(or not)?” * It was submitted to Sayyiduna Malik bin Dinar رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه: “In what state did you find yourself this morning?” He replied: “I have found myself this morning while my life is decreasing and my sins are increasing.” *  A wise person was asked: “In what state did you find yourself this morning?” He replied (humbly): “I have found myself this morning while I consume the sustenance of my Lord and yet I obey His enemy, Iblees.” *  It was submitted to Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Wasi’ رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه: “In what state did you find yourself this morning?” He replied: “What is your opinion regarding that person who travels one stage towards the Hereafter every day?” *  It was submitted in the service of Sayyiduna Hamid Laffaf رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه: “In what state did you find yourself this morning?” He replied: “I have found myself from morning till night to have remained desirous of well-being (‘Aafiyat).” It was asked: “Are you not in well-being every day?” He replied: “True well-being is only on that day when the disobedience of Allah Almighty is not committed.”[1]*  Someone asked Sayyiduna Malik bin Dinar رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه: “How did you find yourself this morning?” He replied: “In what state will that person’s morning be who is about to depart from one house (i.e., this world) towards another house (i.e., the Hereafter), without knowing if his destination is Paradise or Hell.”[2]

Dear Islamic brothers! These are the virtuous mornings of the pious people. How unique their states are! They fear, they see death before them, they concern themselves with the Hereafter, and upon waking up in the morning, they remember their sins. Generally, day and night, morning and evening, they perform only virtuous deeds; despite this, they feel remorse over the lack of virtuous deeds. On the other hand, we are the sinners; neither does the thought of the grave and the Hereafter occur in the morning, nor do we remember Allah Almighty in the evening...!! Alas! If only we could be granted an inclination for goodness! If only we could be blessed with concern for the grave and the Hereafter! If only we could be blessed with the fear of Allah! If only the states of our mornings and evenings could be reformed...!!
