4. Make up missed fasts

Complete all missed fasts before the onset of the next Ramadan, as it is mentioned in a hadith: “Until the previous Ramadan’s fasts are not made up for, the following are not accepted.”[1]

5. Give zakat

Whoever possesses wealth (and meets the conditions of zakat) should also offer zakat. A person should calculate how many years he has not offered zakat for and offer it immediately. Offer the zakat of each year prior to its due date. It is a sin to delay it after the completion of the year. Therefore, offer it bit by bit from the start of the year. When the year completes, calculate it altogether. If it is complete, then all well and good. Whatever may remain should be offered immediately. If more than what was obligatory has been paid, it can be deducted from the following year. Allah does not allow any good deed to be wasted.

6. Fulfil the obligatory Hajj

Hajj is obligatory on every capable person. Explaining its obligatory nature, Allah has stated:

وَ مَنْ كَفَرَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَنِیٌّ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ(۹۷)

Translation from Kanz al-Īmān: “And whoever disbelieves (i.e. denies Hajj being a pillar of Islam), so Allah is Independent of the entire world.”[2]

7. Save yourself from illnesses of the heart

Giving further advice to his murids, Imam Aḥmad Razā Khān رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه said:

Save yourself from lying, immodesty, tale-telling, backbiting, fornication, oppression, treachery, ostentation, arrogance,
