‘Ali al-Murtaḍā رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ upon which she رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهَا said that ‘Ali al-Murtaḍā رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ possesses the most knowledge of Hadith.[1]
Dear Islamic brothers! In the light of these sayings of the blessed companions it has been understood that everyone acknowledged that Sayyiduna ‘Ali کَـرَّمَالـلّٰـهُ وَجۡـھَـهُ الۡـکَـرِیۡم had great intelligence and outstanding ability to understand issues. The second caliph Sayyiduna ‘Umar b. Khaṭṭāb رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ was himself an expert judge, rather the first judge of the Ummah who formally laid the foundation of the system of appointing judges in cities in order to settle the disputes and disagreements between people.[2]
Despite being such a great judge, in his period of caliphate he رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ sometimes did not take any decision without the presence of Sayyiduna ‘Ali al-Murtaḍā رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ. On one occasion, Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ mentioned the following words about the status and the rank of Sayyiduna ‘Ali al-Murtaḍā رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ: ‘عَلِیٌّ اَقْضَانَا’ i.e. Sayyiduna Ali رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ is the chief judge amongst us.[3]
Declaring him the chief judge, the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم himself has stated: Amongst my Ummah the chief judge is ‘Ali Bin Abi Taalib.[4]

Dear Islamic brothers! The outstanding ability of deciding a case and the high status Sayyiduna ‘Ali al-Murtaḍā رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ had over all the judges in the era of Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ can be understood through what is stated on page 308 of a book titled Faizan-e-Farooq-e-A’zam, volume 2 published by Maktaba-tul-Madinah, a publishing department of Dawat-e-Islami, about the method of solving cases which used to be brought to Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ from time to time: Sometimes Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ would solve the complicated problems himself in consultation with the great blessed companions رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُم, but sometimes it also happened that despite making all sorts of efforts, a problem would remain unsolved. For this difficult situation,
