Book Name:Life Is Silently Slipping Away
Soon you will Descend into the Grave
The Companion of the Prophet, Sayyidunā Abū al-Dardāˈ رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ, states:
O son of Ādam! Tread upon the earth with your feet, for soon you will descend into it. O son of Ādam! What is your life? It is nothing but a collection of days. When one day passes, a portion of your life is reduced. Indeed, from the moment you were born, your life has been decreasing continuously.[1]
Sayyidunā ꜤUbaydullāh b. Sumayṭ رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه states that he heard his respected father say:
A believing servant advises himself in this manner:
O soul! This worldly and mortal life is merely three days. One day has already passed; the second is currently passing—this too has virtually passed; and the third day is tomorrow, which is nothing but a hollow hope that you may never attain.
Even if you remain alive until tomorrow, that day will bring sustenance for you and, for many others, the message of death—perhaps you will be among those who receive this message.
If further life is granted to you, poverty, illness, and calamities will weigh heavily upon your frail heart. When so many worldly sorrows surround you, how will your heart turn towards concern for the Hereafter?
Remember! Every passing day continues to reduce your lifespan, yet you remain unconcerned. What preparation for the Hereafter can a person make whose worldly desires are never fulfilled?
How foolish and strange is that Muslim who is certain that this world is transient and the Hereafter is everlasting, yet abandons the
