Allah Almighty states:

لِّمَنْ اَرَادَ اَنْ یَّذَّكَّرَ اَوْ اَرَادَ شُكُوْرًا(۶۲)

for he who intends to attain advice or intends to express gratitude.

The cycle of day and night is, in reality, a test. Through it, you and I are being examined, and through this sequence, the universe is advancing towards its ultimate end.

Lessons Derived from the Noble Verse

Dear Islamic brothers! In this noble verse, there are three lessons for us:

(1) Day and Night Are Successors to One Another

The first lesson is derived from the statement of Allah Almighty:

خِلْفَةً

come after one another ˹as a sign˺

That is, day and night are successors to one another.

This means that the arrival of day after night, a week after another, a month after another, and one year after another is an opportunity for awakening. It is so that we feel remorse over our past shortcomings, acknowledge our flaws, and then dedicate ourselves—during the new day, week, month, and year—to rectify them.

Compensate for the Night during the Day

Sayyidunā SaꜤd b. Abī Waqqāṣرَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  reports:

Once, Sayyidunā ꜤUmarرَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ  was unable to recite the Quran during the night. (Undoubtedly, this caused him grief; so when he entered the court of the Prophet,) the beloved Prophetصَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم  said:
