How To Spend Days And Nights?

Book Name:How To Spend Days And Nights?

Every day calls out: “O people! I am a new day, and I am a witness upon you. O son of Ādam! I will not return again. Therefore, perform good deeds today!” In the same way, every new night says: “O son of Ādam! Perform good deeds tonight! I will never return again.”[1]

Day and Night Are Two Treasures

The renowned saint, Sayyidunā Mālik b. Dīnār رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه says: “Indeed, these days and nights are two treasures. So, reflect on where you are spending these treasures!”[2]

Day and Night Are Two Guests

Imām Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه  stated: “O children of Ādam! These days and nights are your guests. Soon they will depart, either praising you or speaking ill of you.”[3]

Alas! A Day of My Life Is Reduced

Sayyidunā Mufaḍḍal b. Yūnusرَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه  had a blessed routine: when night would fall, he would say: "Ah! A day of my life is reduced." When morning would come, he would say: "Ah!! A night of my life is reduced." When he was near death, he began to weep. He then said: "I know that a day full of calamities is coming upon me. That day is full of severe sorrow. Indeed, He is the true Lord who has decreed death for His creation." After this, he recited these blessed words from Surah al-Mulk, Part 29:

الَّذِیۡ  خَلَقَ الۡمَوۡتَ وَ الۡحَیٰوۃَ لِیَبۡلُوَکُمۡ  اَیُّکُمۡ  اَحۡسَنُ عَمَلًا ؕ

He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is better in virtue[4]

After reading this, he took his last breath and departed from the world.[5]
