out in simple clothes, wearing a lot of fragrance, with his luminous face shining. He would become busy with supererogatory prayers in the corner of the masjid until the time of Fajr. He would then go back to his house, change his clothes, and return. After offering the Fajr prayer with the congregation, he would resume his teaching as he had done the day before until the ꜤIshāˈ prayer.

I thought that he must be very tired and would surely rest tonight, but his routine was the same on the second night as well. The third day and night also passed in the same way. I was impressed, and I decided that I would remain in his service for the rest of my life. I then took up permanent residence in his masjid. It is narrated that Sayyidah RābiꜤah al-Baṣriyyahرحمۃُ اللہِ علیہا  had a routine that when night would fall and everyone would go to sleep, she would say to herself, “O RābiꜤah! This could be the last night of your life. It is possible that you may not be fortunate enough to see tomorrow's sun. Therefore, get up and worship your Lord so that you do not have to face shame on the Day of Judgement. Be courageous; do not sleep, but stay awake and worship your Lord.”

After saying this, she would stand up and offer supererogatory prayers until dawn. When she had offered the Fajr prayer, she would address herself again and say, “O my soul! Congratulations on bearing great hardship last night, but remember that this could be the last day of your life.” After saying this, she would become busy with worship, and when sleep would overpower her, she
