Faqih Abu Lays Samarqandi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه writes that one who wants to save himself from loneliness and bewilderment in the grave should adopt 4 things and avoid 4 things. The one who acts accordingly shall be saved from loneliness and bewilderment in the grave. (Tanbih-ul-Ghafileen, p. 22, summarised)
The first action: Salah (Prayer)
The first action which must be adopted from the four is the prayer. The Beloved Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has said: ‘Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has made 5 prayers obligatory; whoever performs Wudu (ablution) in a good way and offers the prayers within their times completing the bowing and prostrations with humility it is upon Allah’s bestowal that He forgives him. (Abu Dawood, vol. 1, p. 186, Hadith 425)
Another action which changes darkness into light and bewilderment into tranquillity (in the grave) is giving alms in the way of Allah. The Beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: ‘اِنَّ الصَّدَقَۃَ لَتُطْفِئُ عَلٰی اَہْلِہَا حَرَّ الْقُبُوْرِ’ indeed charity protects its givers from the heat of the grave. ‘وَ اِنَّمَا یَسْتَظِلُّ الْمُؤْمِنُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ فِیْ ظِلِّ صَدَقَتِہٖ’ and undoubtedly one shall be in the shade of his charity on the Day of Judgement. (Shu’ab-ul-Iman, vol. 3, p. 212, Hadith 3347)
The third action: Recitation of the Quran
O Devotees of the Beloved Messenger! Recitation of the Quran is one of the deeds that benefit a believer in the grave. The Beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: ‘Recite the Quran as this will come forth on the Day of Judgement to intercede for its reciters.’ (Muslim, p. 314, Hadith 1847)
It is mentioned in another Hadith that three people shall be upon hills of black musk, they will have no anxiety and they will not be called to account; (one of them is) an individual who recited the Quran for the
