Remaining rulings and the etiquette related to the grave and burial

*   Seal the open grave with unbaked bricks. Laying down wooden planks is also permissible in case the ground is soft. (Bahar-e-Shari’at, vol. 1, p. 844)

*   Now, soil should be placed therein. It is preferable to add the soil from the side of the head with both hands thrice. When adding the soil for the first time, reciteمِنْھَا خَلَقْنٰکُمْ’. On the second occasion, recite وَفِیْھَا نُعِیْدُکُمْ’; and for the third time, instance وَمِنْھَا نُخْرِجُکُمْ تَارَۃً اُخْرٰی’. The remaining soil can now be added using a shovel, etc. (Jauharah, p. 141) 

*   It is Makruh (undesirable) to add more soil on the grave than what was dug out. (Fatawa Hindiyyah, vol. 1, p. 166)

*   Do not make a four-cornered grave, rather, create a mound over it like the hump of a camel. It is better to sprinkle water over it (after burying). The grave should be one hand-span high or slightly more. (Bahar-e-Shari’at, vol. 1, p. 846, summarised)

*   Calling out the Azaan near the grave after the burial is an act of reward and most beneficial for the deceased. (Fatawa Hindiyyah, vol. 5, p. 370, derived from)

*   It is preferable to recite the start and end of Surah Al-Baqarah near the grave after the burial. Recite ‘الٓمّٓ’ to ‘مُفْلِحُوْن’ at the head-
