Patience and contentment of the Lion of Allah Almighty
Sayyiduna Suwayd Bin Ghaflah رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ states: I presented myself in the court of Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen Sayyiduna Ali Al-Murtada, the Lion of Allah Almighty at Dar-ul-Amarah (i.e. the capital of his caliphate) Kufa. He had in front of him some barley bread and a bowl of milk, the bread was so dry and hard that he would break it with his hands and at times by placing it on his knees. Seeing this, I said to his maid, Sayyidatuna Fizzah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهَا: Do you not feel sorry for him? Look, there is chaff on the bread, bake soft bread for him by sifting the barley so that it is not difficult to break. Sayyidatuna Fizzah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهَا replied: Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ has made us vow to never sift the barley and bake it. Meanwhile Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ turned to me and said: O Ibn-e-Ghaflah! What are you saying to this maid? I explained what I had said and pleaded: O Leader of the believers! Have mercy on your soul and do not bear so much hardship. He said: O Ibn-e-Ghaflah! The Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and his family never ate wheat bread for three days, nor did he have flour sifted for him and baked. Once I was extremely hungry in Madinah Munawwarah, so I went out to look for some work [so that I could get something to eat]. On the way, I came across a lady who was in search of a person to soak clods of earth which she had gathered, in water. I talked to her and she agreed to pay me a single date per bucket of water used for soaking clods. I poured sixteen buckets of water to soak those clods. As a result of doing this, I got blisters on my hands. Then I took the dates and went to the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and told him the whole incident. He صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم ate from some of these dates too. (Tazkirah-ul-Khawas, p. 112; Faizan-e-Sunnat, p. 369)
O Devotees of the Prophet, the Sahabah and Ahl-e-Bayt! May we be sacrificed on the simplicity of Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen Sayyiduna Ali Al-Murtada, the Lion of Allah Almighty رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ. Despite enduring so much hardship, he never uttered a word of complaint. He never criticised, but rather he continued having gratitude for Allah Almighty; but how regretful! Nowadays, it is seen that some people have a habit of complaining and criticising, sometimes they tell others about their grievances, sometimes they cry for help, sometimes they complain of their distress and sometimes they complain of their poverty. In the end, such people are not happy under any
