hair of my dog’s tail?’ Although this question was such a question that could cause anger, the pious person رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه was an intelligent preacher, hence he answered with politeness, ‘I am also a dog of my Master! If I can make Him happy by being loyal, then I am better, otherwise your dog’s tail is better.’ Because of the pious person رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه was a practising preacher, who would stay away from backbiting, tale-telling, disclosing someone’s faults, bad and useless talks, etc. he would always keep his tongue busy in the remembrance of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. Therefore, the sweet words that came out of his tongue had a profound effect on the heart of Tagudar, like an arrow hitting its target. When he heard such fragrant words as an answer to his question, which was like a thorn of poison, he spoke very politely, ‘You are our guest, please stay at my abode.’ Therefore, the pious person رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه stayed at his place. Tagudar would come in the court of the pious person daily at night and the pious person رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه would always present invitation towards righteousness with affection. His individual effort had such an effect that Tagudar who was ready to wipe away the name of Islam yesterday, today he himself had become in love with Islam. Tagudar and all the Tatari people accepted Islam at the hands of the pious person رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه. His name was changed to Ahmad. History is witness to the fact that through blessings of the sweet words of one preacher, the whole of the Tatari government changed into an Islamic government. (Gheebat ki Tabah Kariyan, pp. 155)

Sweet tongue

O devotees of the Awliya! You heard that our pious predecessors رَحِمَهُمُ الـلّٰـهُ تَـعَالٰی would not get angry upon hearing harsh and cruel words. Rather, they would, with patience and tolerance, demonstrate good character. This is the very reason that their words would have an impact on the person in front of them. Remember! A sweet tongue costs nothing, but its benefits are immense, whereas there are many drawbacks of a harsh tongue.
