head and feed him from your food. Your heart will become soft and your needs will be fulfilled.’ (Musannaf Abdur Razzaq, vol. 10, pp. 135, Hadees 20198)

7. Focus on the harmful effects of a hardheartedness

A harmful effect of hardheartedness is that it pays no heed to any piece of advice and the heart does not incline towards good deeds. Due to hardheartedness, a person earns Allah’s displeasure and curse (being deprived of Allah’s mercy).

Sayyiduna Ali رَضِىَ اللهُ عَـنْهُ narrates that the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has stated: ‘Request goodness from the polite people of my Ummah, keep yourselves close to them and do not ask goodness from the hard-hearted people because curse is showered upon them.’ (Al-Mustadrak, vol. 5, pp. 458, Hadees 7978)

Some rules in relation to neighbours

O devotees of Rasool! Let’s now have the privilege of listening to some rules regarding neighbours. Let’s first listen to 2 blessed sayings of the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم:

1. The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has stated: ‘The best neighbour, in the sight of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ, is that person who is the well-wisher to his neighbour.’ (Tirmizi, vol. 3, pp. 379, Hadees 1951)

2. The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has stated: ‘Whosoever causes harm to his neighbour, he has caused harm to me and whosoever causes harm to me, has displeased Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ.’ (Attargheeb Wattarheeb, vol. 3, pp. 286, Hadees 3907)

٭It is stated in Nuzhat-ul-Qaari: ‘Who is a neighbour? Everyone understands this according to his prevalent situation and norms.’ (Nuzhat-ul-Qaari, 5, pp. 568)
