and an oppressor [how can it be beneficial to give bayꜤah to such a person?]”[1]
Imam Ḥusayn’s رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ Sermon
When Imam Ḥusayn رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ was travelling to Karbala, he delivered a sermon in front of Yazīd’s army:
“O people! The beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘Indeed, if someone observes an oppressive ruler who permits what is forbidden, opposes the Sunnah, breaks the covenant of Allah and spreads oppression and sin amongst the people, but does not prevent him or speak out against him, Allah will make him a disciple of that leader.’ O people! Listen! The followers of Yazīd have turned away from Allah and have obeyed the Devil. They have spread corruption amongst the people and crossed the boundaries of Allah. They have permitted what is forbidden and prohibited what is lawful. I have a greater right of elevating the truth in front of this devious ruler.”[2]
O devotees of the Prophet! Imam Ḥusayn رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ mentioned 7 evil habits of Yazīd:
1. He committed major sins in public.
2. He was an alcoholic.
3. He was an oppressor.
4. He obeyed the Devil instead of Allah.
5. He spread mischief and corruption.
6. He crossed the boundaries of Allah.
