7.   He permitted what was forbidden and made the lawful unlawful.

The Evil Influence of Sins

Now focus on your character! Yazīd was someone who sinned openly. How many of us refrain from sinning publicly? Shaving the beard or keeping it less than a fistful is haram, but how many people commit this sin and walk proudly? How many of us swear at one another or shamelessly tell others of the sins we committed?

The events of Karbala teach us that in order to become a devotee of Imam Ḥusayn, we must refrain from sin. The noble Quran states:

And whosoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has been made clear for him and follows a path other than that of the Muslims, We shall turn him to where he deviates and cast him in Hell—and what a terrible place of return it is.[1]

The noble Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said:

“Allah has established obligations, so do not abandon them. He has made some things unlawful; do not infringe upon them. He has stipulated boundaries, so do not go beyond them, and He [has shown mercy] by remaining silent on some matters, not out of forgetfulness, so do not enquire about them.”[2]
