purpose of listening. Otherwise, it is sufficient if one of them listens while others are occupied in their own matters.[1]
8. It is haram for everybody in a gathering to collectively recite aloud. In gatherings of isaal thawab, usually everybody recites aloud, which is haram. If a number of people are reciting, the ruling for them is to recite quietly.[2]
9. It is impermissible to recite the Quran aloud in the marketplace or anywhere where people are working. If the people do not listen to the recitation, then the sin will be upon the reciter. If the reciter began reciting before the people became occupied in their work at a place that is not specified for work, the sin will be upon the people if they do not listen to the recitation. However, if the reciter began after people had already started working, the sin will be on the reciter.[3]
10. There is no harm in reciting the Quran whilst lying down as long as the face is not covered and the legs are folded [meaning, not stretched out]. It is also permissible to recite the Quran whilst walking or working provided one’s focus is not affected, otherwise it is disliked (makruh).[4]
11. It is impermissible to recite the Quran in the bathroom or in places of impurity.[5]
12. Listening to the recitation of the Quran is better than reciting the Quran or offering voluntary salah (nafl).[6]
