replied, ‘Even bigger.’ The caliph asked, ‘Is it bigger than the Divine Throne?’ He replied, ‘Even bigger.’ The caliph then said, ‘Brother! Surely your sin can’t be greater than the mercy of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ.’ When the person heard this, he began to cry profusely. The caliph asked, ‘Brother, please tell me, what is this sin of yours?’ The person replied, ‘Your Eminence! I feel extremely embarrassed to inform you; however, I will tell you. Perhaps it may pave way for acceptance of my repentance.’ Saying this, he began to reveal his story. He said, ‘I am a shroud thief. Tonight, I learnt lesson from five different graves which forced me to seek forgiveness.’
When I opened the first grave to steal the shroud, I noticed that the face of the deceased had turned away from the direction of Qiblaĥ. As I began to run away in fright, an unseen voice made me tremble even more. It said, ‘Ask this person the reason for his torment?’ Whilst trembling, I replied that I did not have the courage to ask, you tell me. It was said, ‘This person was an alcoholic and an adulterer.’
Qabr rozānaĥ yeĥ kartī ĥay pukār
Mujĥ mayn ĥayn kīřay makořay bay-shumār
The grave proclaims everyday
I have countless insects inside me
