know when this is done.’ This order was obeyed instantly and when the Beloved Rasūl صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم started walking towards ‘Baqī’-e-Gharqad’, I also joined him. Amīr-ul-Mūminīn, Sayyidunā Abū Bakr Ṣiddīq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ met us on the way; the Beloved of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم brought him to his right side and I came to the left, and after sometime Sayyidunā ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ also met us on the way. The Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم took him to his left side and I was asked to go behind. We all reached where the alcohol was placed. He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم asked the people, ‘Do you all know what this is?’ All replied, ‘Yes, O Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم! We know that this is alcohol.’ He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘You have spoken the truth (but remember), concerning alcohol, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has cursed alcohol, the one who extracts it, the one whom it is extracted for, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who brings it, the one whom it is brought for, the one who sells and buys it, and all those who eat from its earnings.’ He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم then asked for a knife to be brought and ordered it to be sharpened. When it was sharpened, he صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم started to slit the leather containers of alcohol. People humbly asked, ‘O Rasūlullāĥ صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم! If only the alcohol is disposed of and the containers are not slit, they can be reused later on.’ He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم replied, ‘I also know this very well but I am doing this to avoid the anger of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ because I fear that there may be risk of the displeasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ even in benefiting from these containers.’ When Sayyidunā ‘Umar Fārūq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ saw the resentment of the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, he رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ requested, ‘O Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم! Please order me! I can easily do that.’ But he صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘No, I will do this thing myself.’ (Al-Mustadrak, vol. 5, pp. 199-200, Ḥadīš 7310)
