Dear Islamic brothers! Istighfār means making Du’ā of forgiveness. Du’ā is made for the forgiveness of both minor and grave sins. Therefore, if Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ wills, He عَزَّوَجَلَّ may answer this prayer with His mercy, forgiving all minor and grave sins. However, about common deeds, Muḥaddišīn and Islamic scholars رَحِمَـهُـمُ الـلّٰـهُ الـسَّلَام have clarified that grave sins are forgiven by repentance only. As for the excellence of other deeds, wherever there is good news of the forgiveness of sins, it refers to the forgiveness of only minor sins.
Sayyidunā Qays Bin ‘Āṣim رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ humbly said to the Beloved and Blessed Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم: During the era of ignorance, I buried my eight daughters alive. The Noblest and Holiest Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘Free one slave for each.’ He رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ humbly said, ‘I have camels.’ The Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘If you want, [you can] sacrifice one camel on behalf of each.’ (Kanz-ul-‘Ummāl, vol. 2, pp. 231, Ḥadīš 3687)
