have affection to each other for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ? But regretfully! These days, selfishness has been so widespread in our society that people try to gain personal interests even in religious matters let alone worldly ones. Take the example of Salam. Salam is a Sunnah of our Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم as well as that of Prophet Aadam عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام the father of mankind.[1] Unfortunately, most of people seem to be heedless of this Sunnah. It is commonly observed that people do not say Salam to the person they do not know. If some people are sitting together, the newcomer says Salam to certain people or to only those he knows. Sometimes, he even does so just as a formality or for gaining any personal benefit. This has already been identified by the Ghayb-knowing Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, as is mentioned in the following narration:
A person passed Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Bin Mas’ood رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ hastily and said, ‘O Abu ‘Abdur Rahman! ﴿اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ﴾.’ He رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ responded, ‘﴿صَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَ بَلَّغَ رَسُوۡلُهٗ صَلَّی اللّٰہ تعالٰی علیہ واٰلہ وسلَّم ﴾ i.e. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ said the truth which His Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم conveyed to us.’ Sayyiduna Taariq Bin Shahaab رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ asked, ‘A person said Salam to you and you said ﴿صَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَ بَلَّغَ رَسُوۡلُهٗ صَلَّی اللّٰہ تعالٰی علیہ واٰلہ وسلَّم ﴾ instead of replying to his Salam.’
Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Mas, ood رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ replied, ‘I heard the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم say that Salam will be said to certain people before [i.e. near]
