مِمَّا خَطِیْٓــٴٰـتِهِمْ اُغْرِقُوْا فَاُدْخِلُوْا نَارًا ﳔ
They were drowned because of their sins. Then they were cast into the Fire,[1]
In the explanation of this verse, it is written: This fire refers to the fire of Barzakh (meaning the torment of the grave). This means that because of their sins and disobedience, they were thrown into the fire inside the grave.[2]
The famous commentator of the Quran, Mufti Aḥmad Yār Khān NaꜤīmī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه writes:
By 'grave' is meant the world of Barzakh. It starts from the death of every person and ends on the Day of Judgement. Therefore, a dead person who was not buried, but rather was burnt, or drowned, or was eaten by a lion, still has to face the accountability and torment of the grave.[3]
This Ummah Will Be Tested in Its Graves
Sayyidunā Zaid b. Thābit رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ narrates:
Once, the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was riding a mule and went into a garden. Suddenly, the mule became scared and started jumping. It was seen that there were four or five graves there. The Final Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم asked: “Who knows the people of these graves?”
A person replied, “I know them.”
He صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم asked: “When did they die?”
