Sunnahs and Manners of Sleeping and Waking
Dear Islamic brothers! Let us listen to some Sunnahs and manners of sleeping and waking from the booklet "101 Madani Pearls" written by Ameer Ahl al-Sunnah دَامَـتْ بَـرَكَـاتُـهُـمُ الْـعَـالِـيَـهْ:
1. Dust the bed well before sleeping so that any harmful insects, etc., are removed.
2. Recite this dua before sleeping: اَللّٰھُمَّ بِاسْمِکَ اَمُوْتُ وَاَحْیٰی (Translation: O Allah! With Your name, I die and I live [meaning I sleep and wake up]).[1]
3. Do not sleep after the Asr prayer, as there is a fear of losing one’s intellect. The Final Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated: "The person who sleeps after Asr and loses his intellect should only blame himself."[2]
4. Qaylulah (a short midday nap) is mustaḥabb (recommended).[3] Mufti Amjad ꜤAlī al-AꜤẓamī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه says: This is likely for those who stay awake at night (for worship), perform prayers at night, perform dhikr of Allah Almighty, or remain busy reading and studying books. The tiredness of staying awake at night will be removed by the midday nap.[4]
5. Sleeping in the early part of the day or between Maghrib and Isha is makrūh (disliked).[5]
6. It is mustaḥabb to sleep in a state of purity.
7. Sleep on the right side for a while, with the right hand under the cheek, facing the Qiblah. After this, one can sleep on the left side as well.
8. While sleeping, remember the sleep in the grave, because there, one will have to sleep alone, and only your good deeds will be with you.
