the hypocrites, though the poor soul assumes that he has attained closeness to Allah Almighty.[1]
صَلُّوۡا عَلَى الۡحَبِيۡب صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّد
Dear Islamic brothers! In order to remove the desire for honour and fame from your heart, to free yourself from the calamity of arrogance, and to save your good deeds from being wasted due to ostentation, study the lives and sayings of the pious predecessors رَحِمَهُمُ الـلّٰـهُ, and make an intention to act upon them.
It is narrated that a man once accompanied Sayyidunā ꜤAbdullāh bin Muḥayrīz رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه. When he was about to part from him, he requested: “Please give me some advice.” Sayyidunā Ibn Muḥayrīz رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه said: “If you are able to do so, act upon these three matters:
1.Recognise others, but do not seek to be recognised.
2.Walk, but let no one walk behind you.
3.Ask questions, but let no one be in need of asking you.”[2]
A man once visited Sayyidunā Dāwūd al-ṬāꜤī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه. He رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه asked the reason for the visit, and he replied: “I have come to visit you.”
He رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه said: “Due to your good opinion of me, you have done a good deed for yourself by visiting me. But what about me? If I am asked, ‘Who are you that people visit you?’- what will I answer? If I am asked if I am from the worshippers, I will reply, ‘By Allah!
