Punishment for missing Jama’at
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas and Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُم have narrated that they heard the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم saying this on the pulpit:
لَيَنۡتَهِيَنَّ اَقۡوَامٌ عَنۡ وَدۡعِهِمُ الۡجَمَاعَاتِ اَوۡ لَيَخۡتِمَنَّ اللّٰهُ عَلٰي قُلُوبِهِمۡ ثُمَّ لَيَكُونُنَّ مِنۡ الۡغَافِلِينَ
‘People should abstain from missing Jama’at, otherwise Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ will seal their hearts, and then they will be amongst heedless people.’
(Sunan Ibn Majah, vol. 1, pp. 436, Hadees 794)
In another blessed Hadees, the same warning has been given for missing Friday Salah: The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has said: People should abstain from missing Friday Salah, otherwise Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ will seal their hearts [and] then they will be amongst heedless people. (Sahih Muslim, pp. 430, Hadees 865)
Regarding this blessed Hadees, Hakeem-ul-Ummat, Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه has stated: Keep in mind that here either the conversation is about the hypocrites who did not use to come for Friday Salah (or daily Salahs) or it is about the [people who will come in] future, otherwise no companion had ever missed a Friday Salah (or missed a daily Salah or missed a Jama’at). (Mirat-ul-Manajeeh, vol. 2, pp. 330)
