Name and lineage, birth and death

The Kunniyyat of Imam Ghazali رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه is Abu Hamid, title Hujjat-ul-Islam (proof of Islam) and blessed name Muhammad Bin Muhammad Ghazali Shafa’i رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه. He was born in Taabiran in District Tus (Iran) in 450 H. (Ittihaf-us-Sadaat-ul-Muttaqeen, vol. 1, pp. 9). He received his early education in his city. He studied books of Fiqh from Sayyiduna Ahmad Raazkani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه. When he was below 20, he went to Jurjaan (the eastern city of Iran) to acquire further knowledge. In 473 H, he went to Imam-ul-Haramayn, Imam Abdul Malik Juweni رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه in Neeshapur (an old city of Iran) where he gained complete expertise in Usool-e-Deen (Principles of Islam), logic and wisdom etc. (Ittihaf-us-Sadaat-ul-Muttaqeen, vol. 1, pp. 9). Every book of Sayyiduna Imam Muhammad Ghazali رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه is a precious treasure of knowledge, but Ihya-ul-Uloom is a matchless book. This book is very helpful in making human ‘a perfect human’. It has been the centre of attention of Masha’ikh and Aarifeen, Aqtaab and pious saints, Islamic scholars and Sufiya in every age. Finally, Imam Ghazali رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه departed this mortal world on 14 Jumad-al-Aakhir, 505 H, Monday in Taabiran (Tus) and his blessed shrine is situated there.
