Determination to disgrace his Nafs

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin ‘Umar Bin Hafs رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُمَا has said that once Ameer-ul-Mu`mineen, Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq-e-A’zam رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ lifted his Mashkeezah on his back. He was requested not to lift it. He said: “My Nafs has made me arrogant, so I have decided to disgrace it.’ (Tareekh-e-Islam, vol. 3, pp. 270)

Introduction to the book, Faizan-e-Farooq-e-A’zam رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ

Dear Islamic brothers! Ameer-ul-Mu`mineen, Sayyiduna Farooq-e-A’zam      رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ certainly had no spiritual diseases nor bad qualities, but to teach us a cure to arrogance through his action, he shows us that one should do his work himself in order to protect his Nafs from these disasters. By virtue of his humbleness and humility, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has granted him great respect, status and rank and therefore his remembrance continues to take place all over world. Furthermore, all Muslims will take lessons and follow in his blessed footsteps, اِنْ شَــآءَالـلّٰـه عَزَّوَجَلَّ.
