Unnoticed, Though Right Before Their Eyes
The miracles of the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم , while highlighting many other beautiful aspects, also demonstrate that when Allah Almighty wills, He grants remarkable protection to the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم from the disbelievers. Consequently, when the disbelievers of Makkah observed that the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and the Muslims had gained supporters outside Makkah, in Madinah, and that the Anṣār had provided refuge to the Muslims migrating to Madinah, they feared that the Muslims might prepare an army in Madinah to wage war against them. Therefore, they convened a major meeting in their Dār al-Nadwah (assembly house), attended by all influential figures and chieftains of Quraysh.
Iblis, the accursed, also appeared in the guise of an old man and stated, “I am Shaykh Najd, and upon hearing of this meeting, I came.” The chieftains allowed him to join the meeting, and then a formal consultation began concerning the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم , on what should finally be done with him. Consequently, three distinct proposals were presented there: one was that the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم should be shackled and imprisoned, and the second was that he should be expelled from Makkah. Iblis highlighted the flaws of both proposals and rejected them.
The third proposal was put forward by Abu Jahl: that a brave man from each tribe should collectively attack and assassinate [Sayyidunā] Muhammad صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم . The crime of murder would then rest upon all tribes. It was evident that the Banū Hāshim clan would not be able to fight all tribes to avenge this murder; therefore, they would surely agree to accept blood money, which we would all contribute to pay. Upon hearing this proposal, Iblis exclaimed, “Now that is a plan! This is the best proposal.” Consequently, everyone agreed to this and departed from there.
Subsequently, on the very night these disbelievers intended to execute their evil plan, the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was destined to emigrate by the command of Allah Almighty. Thus, Angel Jibrīl عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلاَم came and conveyed to the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم : “Do not sleep on your bed tonight. On this night, the disbelievers have gathered outside your door to attack you when you sleep.” When The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم came to know of this, he said to Sayyidunā ꜤAlī رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ: “Cover yourself with this green Hadrami sheet of mine and sleep on my bed; they will not be able to harm you.” Furthermore, informing him about his emigration, the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم commanded him that, “You are to remain in Makkah until you return the trusts of the people that are with me to their owners.” Then the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم took a handful of earth and, reciting the initial verses of Surah Yasīn, passed by these disbelievers. He even sprinkled a little earth on their heads, yet none of them could see the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم .[1]
