mouth. He took it and explained, “This is what I have gained after leaving my kingdom.”[1]

The mercy of Allah

In reality, when a person truly lives by the words لَبَّیْک اَللّٰہُمَّ لَبَّیْک; when he practically implements what this means into his life; when he prioritises Allah above everything else; such a person will only do whatever pleases Allah and avoid everything his Lord forbids him from. Such a person walks the path to Paradise and saves himself from doing anything which may take him to Hell. When this happens, Allah bestows great blessings upon them.

In a hadith qudsi narrated in aī al-Bukhāri, Allah declared:

إِنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ بِشِبْرٍ تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ ذِرَاعًا وَإِنْ أَتَانِي يَمْشِي أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْوَلَة وَإِنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ ذِرَاعًا تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ بَاعًا

If he comes towards Me by one handspan, I draw one yard nearer to him. If he comes towards Me by one yard, I draw one mile nearer to him. If he comes to Me walking, My mercy runs towards him.[2]

This means, when a person takes a small step towards actions which please Allah, the mercy of Allah draws closer to him. When someone goes one handspan nearer to good actions which please Allah, the mercy of Allah draws closer to him by a yard. When a person goes a yard closer to these good actions, the mercy of Allah draws closer by a mile (in other words, mercy comes closer to him by a great amount). When a person slowly but surely takes action to please Allah, it is as though the mercy of Allah runs towards him.
