coma. Presuming him to be dead, his close relatives washed and shrouded his body and then buried him. When he regained consciousness in his grave at night, he was astonished to find himself buried. In this state of alarm and anxiety, he recalled that whoever recites Surah Ya Sin 40 times in a state of difficulty, Allah Almighty removes his difficulty and turns his difficulty into ease. Therefore, he began reciting Surah Ya Sin.
He had only recited it 39 times when a shroud thief began to dig open his grave with the intention of stealing his shroud. Through his spiritual insight as a believer, he realised this was a shroud thief. Therefore, he started to recite for the 40th time in a very low voice so that the thief could not hear. As he completed his 40th recital, the shroud thief had completed his task. Imam Nasir al-Din رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه sat up and came out of his grave. Out of sheer fright, the shroud thief’s heart failed, and he passed away.
Imam Nasir al-Din رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه thought to himself that if I return to the city immediately, people will become worried and frightened. He returned to the city at night calling out at the entrance of every of place, “I am Nasir al-Din al-Basti (رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه). Seeing me in the state of coma, you wrongly perceived me to have died and buried me, but I am alive.” After this incident, Imam Nasir al-Din رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه wrote an exegesis of the noble Qur’an.[1]
