Prayer was not offered and the days of menstruation began

Q: What do the scholars of Islam say regarding the following matter: Two hours had passed since the uhr prayer time began, but the woman had not yet offered her uhr prayer when she started menstruating. What is the ruling on this prayer? Will it be necessary to make it up, and will she be sinful for delaying it?

A: In the above-mentioned scenario, the woman will not be sinful for delaying prayer, and she is not required to make this prayer up either. This is because if menstruation begins before the end time of prayer, such a prayer is excused, even if menstruation begins just a short while before the prayer time comes to an end. Nevertheless, even during the days of menstruation, it is mustaabb (recommended) for such a woman to maintain the habit of worship in the place that she has specified for prayer in the home. She can do this by sitting there for the duration of prayer and engaging in the remembrance of Allah Almighty.

Can a female who is memorising the noble Quran recite it during the days of menstruation?

Q: What do the scholars of Islam say regarding the following matter: can a female who has memorised the noble Quran or mature girls who are currently memorising the noble Quran recite it or touch it for the purposes of memorisation during the days of menstruation? An individual (who is not an Islamic scholar but teaches the noble Quran to children) claims that a woman who has memorised the noble Quran or females who are currently memorising the noble Quran can touch it and recite it during the days of menstruation, as not reciting during this period will waste time and lead to weakness in memorisation. Is this correct, even though this person has no proof?

A: There are only two cases where a mature female is permitted to recite the noble Quran during days of menstruation and when experiencing post-natal bleeding, but without the intention of reciting the noble Quran:

(1) With the intention of dhikr, glorification and supplication, meaning, she may recite those verses of the Quran that have the meaning of dhikr, glorification and supplication with the intention of dhikr, glorification and supplication. This is with the condition that those verses are not specified with the noble Quran, such as the verses in which the praise of Allah Almighty is mentioned using the first person, the disjoined letters (urūf muqaṭṭāt), and those verses or surahs that begin with the word “قُلْ” when they are recited with قُلْ.

(2) For teaching purposes, a female instructor may recite to her students by breaking up the verse into separate words and taking a breath with each word, so long as she does not have the intention of reciting the noble Quran.

Apart from these two situations, it is forbidden for a mature female to recite the noble Quran during her days of menstruation or post-natal bleeding, be it for the sake of memorising, revising or any other reason, such as litanies, etc. Also, it is prohibited for her to touch the noble Quran for any reason during such days.

However, during these specific days, females who have memorised the noble Quran or are currently memorising it may read it within their heart by simply looking at the noble Quran without touching it or moving their lips.

It is incorrect and false for one to assert that female memorisers may recite or touch the noble Quran during their days of bleeding. Such a person is sinful for mentioning the incorrect ruling based on his own flawed understanding, without any proof. It is essential for him to repent and not to mention incorrect rulings in the future.
