What is Valentine's Day? Why don't we celebrate on this day?

Chastity of a man is the beauty of his character. A Muslim can never be a true Muslim unless he saves himself from every kind of immodesty. It is one of the most striking characteristics of Islam that it wants to keep each and every follower of it away from every kind of immorality. The holy Quran Pak says;

Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."

Dear Islamic brothers! The celebration of valentine day is also a sort of promotion of immorality which only leads to destruction of the moral fabric of a society. This day comes with the message of vulgarity and shamelessness. In reality obscenity is covered under the bouquet of flowers and poison of debauchery is tasted and shared through the sweetness of chocolate. If we examine the whole celebration of the day we can point out at least the following sins very clearly.

What happens in Valentine’s Day?

On Valentine’s Day boys and girls in order to show their illegitimate love for each other exchange gifts in form of flowers chocolates and Paper hearts etc. They meet in different places and spend the time together. In many cases during this meeting they are alone. And what happens in this situation everyone knows. If we analyze this situation according to Islamic teachings we come to know about following unlawful actions:

· The exchange of gifts for strengthening the unlawful relationship.

· The unlawful meeting of a boy and a girl.

· Their coming together in seclusion.

· And in many cases the physical contact (adultery and fornication).

· This meeting eliminates the Haya (sense of shame) and makes a person shameless.

Now let’s ask Sharia for the specific commandments of above mentioned actions.

In the light of Islam the exchange of gifts in this case is Haram and sinful act. Both of them are sinners and these gifts are filthy possessions. Moreover these are a form of bribe which is being exchanged to establish unlawful relationship. It is compulsory for both of these sinners to return these gifts and make true repentance. As for the meeting of a boy and girl is concerned it is impermissible and it becomes a more shameful act when they meet in seclusion because in this case devil also comes as a third person who urges them to commit haram and they end up committing Zina (adultery). A hadith describing this situation says; “No man is alone with a woman but the Satan will be the third one present.”

The physical contact in any form with a non-mahram without a valid Shari reason is Haram and Sin. Even looking at a non mahram in this case is a form of adultery. A Hadith says, “Casting a lustful glance is adultery of eyes.” Another hadith says, “Anyone who commits haram with his eyes, on the Day of Judgment his eyes will be filled with the fire of Hell.”

It is written in some books. Avoid adultery/fornication, for it has six effects; of these three are experienced in this world and the other three in the hereafter.

The three experienced in this world are:

1. Noor (luster) vanishes from the faces of adulterers.

2. It brings poverty and famine.

3. The lifespan is reduced.

The three experienced in the hereafter are:

1. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ subjects the adulterers to His Anger.

2. They will be subjected to strict reckoning on the Day of Judgment.

3. They will be cast into Hell.

Imam Shafi’ee رَحْمَۃُ اللہِ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ while describing the consequences of zina in the form of poetry rebukes the unfortunate sinner with following couplets:

إنَّ الزِّنا دَينٌ إذا أقرضتًه

كان الوفا مِن أهلِ بيتِك فاعلمِ

لو كنتَ حرًّا مِن سُلالةِ ماجدٍ

ما كنتَ هتَّاكًا لحرمةِ مُسلمِ

Translation: Indeed Zina is a form of loan which women of your household have to pay back. O adulterer if you were a man of noble character and descendant of a noble lineage you would never devastate the honor of other Muslim.

O the one who commits this grave sin! You must pay attention to the word of Imam Shafi’ee رَحْمَۃُ اللہِ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ. Reflect upon them again he says, “this is a loan which will be paid back by someone from your home i.e. your wife or sister or daughter.” May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ protect us. The following hadith is enough to tell what happens to a Muslim who loses his haya.

“Indeed iman (faith) and Haya remain together. Whenever any of them departs, the other departs as well.”

Dear Islamic brothers! What have been mentioned is enough to show us the consequences of celebrating this kind of day. Being a Muslim it is our responsibility to not only refrain from this evil celebration ourselves but also make the mind of others to quit this vulgarity. Please share this blog with others.
