Surah Fussilat Ayat 17-18 Translation Tafseer

Para 24 - فَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

41.17-18

وَ اَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَهَدَیْنٰهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمٰى عَلَى الْهُدٰى فَاَخَذَتْهُمْ صٰعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُوْنِ بِمَا كَانُوْا یَكْسِبُوْنَۚ (17) وَ نَجَّیْنَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ كَانُوْا یَتَّقُوْنَ۠ (18)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

And as for Thamūd, so We guided them, then they preferred blindness overguidance, so the lightning of humiliating punishment seized them due to what they earned. [1] And We granted salvation to those who believed and were pious.

Commentary

Three different types of punishment that befell the nation of Thamūd have been mentioned in the Quran: 1. They were seized by an earthquake; 2. They were seized by the sound of a piercing cry; 3. They were seized by a humiliating punishment of lightning. All three transpired, which is why the destruction of Thamūd’s nation can be attributed to any of these.
