Surah Al Muzzammil Ayat 20 Translation Tafseer

Para 29 - تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِیْ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

73.20

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ تَقُوْمُ اَدْنٰى مِنْ ثُلُثَیِ الَّیْلِ وَ نِصْفَهٗ وَ ثُلُثَهٗ وَ طَآىٕفَةٌ مِّنَ الَّذِیْنَ مَعَكَؕ-وَ اللّٰهُ یُقَدِّرُ الَّیْلَ وَ النَّهَارَؕ-عَلِمَ اَنْ لَّنْ تُحْصُوْهُ فَتَابَ عَلَیْكُمْ فَاقْرَءُوْا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِؕ-عَلِمَ اَنْ سَیَكُوْنُ مِنْكُمْ مَّرْضٰىۙ-وَ اٰخَرُوْنَ یَضْرِبُوْنَ فِی الْاَرْضِ یَبْتَغُوْنَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِۙ-وَ اٰخَرُوْنَ یُقَاتِلُوْنَ فِیْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰهِ ﳲ فَاقْرَءُوْا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنْهُۙ-وَ اَقِیْمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَ اٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَ اَقْرِضُوا اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًاؕ-وَ مَا تُقَدِّمُوْا لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ مِّنْ خَیْرٍ تَجِدُوْهُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُوَ خَیْرًا وَّ اَعْظَمَ اَجْرًاؕ-وَ اسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَؕ-اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْمٌ۠ (20)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

Indeed your Lord knows that you and a group of those who are with you stand in prayer ˹for˺ almost two thirds of the night, half of it, and a third of it. Allah controls the measure of the night and day. He knows you will never be able to stand the entire night, so He turned to you with His Mercy:[1] recite from the Quran that which is easy for you.[2] He knows that soon some among you will become ill and others will travel the earth seeking theGrace of Allah, and others will fight in the way of Allah;[3] so recite from it that which is easy for you and establish the prayer and give zakat and give a good loan to Allah.[4] And whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah as better and a greater reward. And seek forgiveness from Allah. Indeed Allah is Most-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.

Commentary

In the introductory verses of this chapter, there was a reference to tahajjud (a specific night prayer) being obligatory upon the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and the companions رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُم. According to one narration, this verse lifted this obligation from the nation (ummah).

The general obligation to recite Quran in salah is proven in this verse.

From here on, the wisdom behind easing the command of tahajjud (to keep vigil) is mentioned: Allah Almighty knows that soon some people will fall ill; some will travel the earth to seek His grace through business; some will travel to seek knowledge, and some will fight in His way against the disbelievers. It is due to these reasons that keeping vigil will be difficult for all of them to maintain.

This “loan” refers to spending in the Way of Allah Almighty in addition to zakat. For example, spending money to maintain ties with family and to cater for guests. According to some Quranic commentators, this refers to all the optional charity that is given through lawful (ḥalāl) earnings and spent in the Way of Allah Almighty wholeheartedly.
