Thoughts of passing away with every step
Allah’s final Messenger صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم once saw his Companion Usāmah رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ purchasing a month’s worth of supplies on credit, and said:
Are you not surprised by Usāmah buying ˹to suffice˺ for a month? By Allah! When I place my foot on the ground, I surmise I shall pass away before I raise it. Whenever I place a morsel of food in my mouth, I consider I shall pass away before I swallow it.[1]
Jealousy is the second main cause of a dark and hard heart. This refers to wanting a bounty or blessing to be taken away from your Muslim brother. This is a major spiritual disease, and Allah has commanded us to seek refuge from the jealous. He announced:
وَ مِنۡ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ اِذَا حَسَدَ (۵)
And from the evil of the envier when he envies me.[2]
اللہُ اَکْبَر Dear Islamic brothers! Jealousy is a huge fitnah and evil. Allah equates those who are jealous with Satan, and ordered for us to seek refuge from them.[3] A hadith explains, “Jealousy devours good deeds the way fire burns dry wood.”[4]
Imam Ghazāli رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه continues by saying:
Jealousy inflicts anxiety and meandering sadness upon a person. It leads to being shackled in the curses of disgrace and deprivation. One of its major detriments is how it blinds a
