Revering the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم means to also revere each and every thing that bears ties with him. Makkah and Madinah (as a whole, and); whichever places within them were honoured to be visited by the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم should also be shown as much reverence as possible. Wherever he stayed, whatever he touched, be it with his hand or any other part of his sacred body; all of these should also be shown the same level of respect. 

‘Allamah Qāḍi ‘Īyāḍ Māliki  رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه , also referenced select incidents regarding this topic, and he continued by saying,

Sayyidunā ‘Abd Allah bin ‘Umar رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ was seen placing his hand on the part of the pulpit upon which the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم would sit, and then rub this hand upon his face.

Referencing another incident, Qāḍi ‘Īyāḍ Māliki رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه describes how Imam Mālik رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه never rode an animal in Madinah al-munawwarah, and the great imam would say, “I feel ashamed before Allah to trample with the hooves of my animal the blessed earth in which the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم rests.” ^[1]
