2. A student should not sit in the place his teacher does, even in the latter’s absence.
3. A student should not precede his teacher when walking.
4. When spending on his teacher, a student should not be stingy. In fact, whatever the teacher needs should be happily given by his student. If the teacher accepts this, a student should consider it their own honour and a favour of his teacher upon him.
5. In comparison to the rights of his parents and all other Muslims, a student should give predominance to the rights of his teacher above everyone else.
6. Humbleness and humility should be displayed before the teacher, even if only one letter was learnt from them.
7. If the teacher is within his home, the door should not be knocked upon. He should instead be waited for outside, until he comes out himself.
8. Whoever gives any form of pain or difficulty to their teacher, will remain deprived from the blessings of knowledge.[1]
Dear Islamic brothers! The teacher holds the rank of being a spiritual father. A student should seek knowledge from the teacher whilst keeping the teacher’s deserved respect in mind. It is stated in Tafseer Kabir: “A teacher is more affectionate to his student than his parents, because parents protect him from the calamities and fire of this world, whereas teachers save him from Hellfire and the calamities of the Hereafter.[2]
Dear Islamic brothers! Among our elders, the status and rank of our elder brother is also esteemed. In the heart of the elder brother, Allah Almighty places affection like that of father for his younger siblings. The elder brother looks after the younger siblings and fulfils their needs even in the presence of
