neighbours and to what extent it is necessary upon us to fulfil their rights.

The Beloved Prophet   صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم   said:

Do you know what the right of a neighbour is? It is that when he seeks help, you should help him. When he asks for a loan, you should give him a loan. When he is needy, you should support him. When he falls ill, you should inquire after his health. When he attains goodness, you should congratulate him. When he is inflicted with a calamity, you should console him. When he dies, then go along with his funeral [procession]. Do not block his air by raising your building high without his permission. Do not bother him with your cooking [smells], instead give him a share of it. If you buy fruit, send some to him too. If it is not (possible) to send it to him, keep it hidden when bringing it to your home, and your children should not take it out as it will upset the children of your neighbour.[1]

The Holy Prophet   صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم   said: “By Allah Almighty, he will not be (an absolute) believer. By Allah Almighty, he will not be (an absolute) believer. By Allah Almighty, he will not be (an absolute) believer.” Someone asked: “O Messenger of Allah  صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم , who?” The Holy Prophet   صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم   said: “The person whose neighbour is troubled from his mischiefs.”[2]

There is a lesson in these blessed aḥādīth for those unwise people who, instead of helping their neighbours, create difficulties for them by parking vehicles in front of their houses, by letting dirty water flow, increasing the sound of their speakers, or through other means. When doing these wrong acts, they do not feel any embarrassment. Surely this behaviour is against the teachings of Islam because Islam is the biggest supporter of the rights of neighbours and Islam teaches us to like for our neighbour what we like for ourselves.

The Beloved Prophet   صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم   said: “By the One in Whose power lies my soul, a person cannot be a believer until he likes for his neighbour or his brother what he likes for himself.”[3]
