Remaining pearls of wisdom for earning a halal livelihood
.If there is a specified duration for the employment term, such as 12 months, the employment cannot be terminated without mutual agreement of both parties. It is not correct for the boss to make threats of dismissing the employee or for the employee to threaten to leave. However, if there is a need, as stipulated by Islamic Law, either of them can end the employment before its time.[1]
.It is not permissible for a Muslim to work for a non-Muslim in a capacity that results in his humiliation, such as cleaning his home, picking up his rubbish, cleaning his car, etc. He may, however, undertake employment that does not result in his humiliation.[2]
.An employee should avoid utilising the stationery and other items of the workplace for personal use.[3]
.Those whose work involves remaining awake and keeping watch, such as guards and police officers, they will be sinful sleeping intentionally during working hours. Their wage will be docked in accordance to the amount of time they spent sleeping or in heedlessness.[4]
