یٰۤاَیُّهَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَقُوْلُوْا رَاعِنَا وَ قُوْلُوا انْظُرْنَا وَ اسْمَعُوْاؕ

O believers! Do not say “inā” (consider our state), rather, say, “˹Your Excellency, ˺ look upon us!” and listen attentively in advance[1]

Explaining this verse, it is written in Tafsīr Ṣirāṭ al-Jinān:

(1) Honouring and revering the Prophets عَـلَـيْـهِمُ الـصَّلٰوةُ وَالـسَّـلَام and maintaining proper etiquette in their presence is an obligation (farḍ). Any word that carries even the slightest possibility of disrespect is forbidden to utter.

(2) Words that have two meanings, one good and one bad, where the bad meaning may also come to mind when spoken, should not be used for Allah Almighty and the Holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.

(3) Allah Himself teaches the etiquette of the Prophet’s   صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ presence and issues commands regarding his veneration.

(4) This verse indicates that disrespect in the sacred presence of the Prophets عَـلَـيْـهِمُ الـصَّلٰوةُ وَالـسَّـلَام amounts to disbelief (kufr).
