clothes. The way farmers need clothes, in the same way, the tailors are in need of farmers for wheat. Everyone is in need of one another. Therefore, it is essential that the products of one another reach each other, so that everyone’s needs are fulfilled and no difficulty is created in chores. This is how these matters were initiated, and affairs like buying and selling, etc. began.[1]
Dear Islamic brothers! Business is, without a doubt, a good and permissible action. This is why the noble companions عَـلَيْهِمُ الرِّضْوَانْ would buy and sell clothes and other items from each other. The scholars and pious people رَحِمَہُمُ اللہُ السَّلام after them also engaged in trade. However, they would never waver from the principles of Islam in regards to trade even in the slightest. Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran, part 5, surah al-Nisāʾ, verse no. 29:
یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تَاۡکُلُوۡۤا اَمۡوَالَکُمۡ بَیۡنَکُمۡ بِالۡبَاطِلِ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ تَکُوۡنَ تِجَارَۃً عَنۡ تَرَاضٍ مِّنۡکُمۡ
O believers! Do not unfairly consume the wealth of each other, except that it is a trade by your mutual agreement.[2]
Imām Aḥmad bin Ḥajar Makkī Haitamī ShafiꜤī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه states:
It is evident from this verse that Allah Almighty has permitted trade only when both parties reach an agreement. The parties will only reach an agreement when there is no deceit involved. Therefore, whoever desires the pleasure of Allah and His messenger, safety for his religion, this world and the Hereafter, and honour and respect should make efforts for his religion and avoid adopting anything deceitful in business.[3]
