‘Awf رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ and other blessed companions رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ تَـعَـالٰی عَـنْـهُم. These great personages would pay the rights of the wealth, that is, they would pay its Zakah and even in addition to paying Zakah they would give lots of Sadaqah and charity in the name of Islam. May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ protect us from its curse that develops due to the love of wealth and enable us to pay its Zakah every year as it is Fard to pay the Zakah of wealth. On the other hand, being stingy if someone saves it and does not pay its Zakah, so this act of his will cause him to suffer torment from Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ in the Hereafter. In Ayah 180 of Surah Aal-e-‘Imran, part 4 Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has stated:

وَ  لَا  یَحْسَبَنَّ  الَّذِیْنَ  كَفَرُوْۤا  اَنَّمَا  نُمْلِیْ  لَهُمْ  خَیْرٌ  لِّاَنْفُسِهِمْؕ-اِنَّمَا  نُمْلِیْ  لَهُمْ  لِیَزْدَادُوْۤا  اِثْمًاۚ-وَ  لَهُمْ  عَذَابٌ  مُّهِیْنٌ(۱۷۸)

Translation from Kanz-ul-Iman: And never must those who act miserly in respect to what Allah has bestowed upon them of His grace, think that it is good for them; rather, it is bad for them; soon that for which they have been niggardly, (it) shall be a collar around their necks on the Day of Resurrection; and Allah only is the Owner of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Aware of your deeds.

It is stated in Ayah 34, 35 of Surah At-Taubah, part 10:

وَ الَّذِیْنَ یَكْنِزُوْنَ الذَّهَبَ وَ الْفِضَّةَ وَ لَا یُنْفِقُوْنَهَا فِیْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰهِۙ-فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِیْمٍۙ(۳۴) یَّوْمَ یُحْمٰى عَلَیْهَا فِیْ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوٰى بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَ جُنُوْبُهُمْ وَ ظُهُوْرُهُمْؕ-هٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ فَذُوْقُوْا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْنِزُوْنَ(۳۵)
