Mu’jizaat and their Types

Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ sent blessed Ambiya عَـلَـيْـهِمُ الـصَّلٰوةُ وَالـسَّـلَام for protecting the people from misguidance and for guiding them to the straight path. After seeing the excellent way of life and impeccable character of Ambiya عَـلَـيْـهِمُ الـصَّلٰوةُ وَالـسَّـلَام, the fortunate people accepted faith that this holy person is the Nabi of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and have come to guide us. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ blessed the Ambiya عَـلَـيْـهِمُ الـصَّلٰوةُ وَالـسَّـلَام with countless great attributes and qualities. One of them is Mu’jizah [miracle].

What is Mu’jizah?

An unusual and extraordinary action that occurs through a Nabi after the declaration of Nubuwwah and that is impossible to occur in usual circumstances is called a Mu’jizah. There are three types of Mu’jizah:

Mu’jizah that is always related to the blessed physical self, such as fragrant sweat.

Temporary intentional Mu’jizah, such as the staff getting converted into a serpent.

Temporary unintentional Mu’jizah, such as the revelation of the Ayahs of Quran.(Mirat-ul-Manajih, vol. 8, pp. 53)

Mu’jizah distinguishes a true Nabi from the false one. Therefore, anyone who falsely claims to be a Nabi cannot show Mu’jizah. (Al-Mu’taqid-ul-Muntaqad, pp. 113)

Mu’jizaat of the last Nabi, Muhammad Mustafa صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم

Since, the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم is superior to all Ambiya, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ blessed him with all the Mu’jizaat of Ambiya. There are two types of Mu’jizaat of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم:

1. Mu’jizaat related to his blessed physical self

The “physical and inner self” of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم is completely a Mu’jizah.

Mu’jizah of the blessed hair of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم: It remained in the Topi[1] of Sayyiduna Khalid Bin Waleed رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ, so he always achieved victory over the enemies. (‘Umda-tul-Qaari, vol. 2, pp. 484, Taht-al-Hadees 170)

Mu’jizah of the blessed saliva of the Beloved Rasool

In (the battle of) Khyber, the sore eyes of Sayyiduna ‘Ali کَـرَّمَ الـلّٰـهُ تَـعَـالٰی وَجۡـھَـهُ الۡـکَـرِیۡم became well when the blessed saliva of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was applied to them. (Sahih Bukhari, vol. 2, pp. 294, Hadees 2942)

When the blessed saliva of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was mixed with the water of the well, the water of the well started curing the people. (Tabqat Ibn Sa’d, vol. 1, pp. 392)

Mu’jizah of the blessed fingers of the Beloved Rasool

Spring [of water] would spout from his blessed fingers. (Sahih Bukhari, vol. 2, pp. 493, Hadees 3573)

Mu’jizah of the blessed sweat of the Beloved Rasool

It would be extremely fragrant. (Sahih Muslim, pp. 978, Hadees 6055)

2. Mu’jizaat other than those related to his blessed physical self

Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has blessed the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم with countless such Mu’jizaat. Following are some of them:

Stone started to float

While standing near water before embracing Islam, Ikramah Bin Abi Jahl said to the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم: ‘If you are truthful, the stone lying at a distance should come to you while doing Tasbih without sinking into the water.’ The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم gestured [towards it], so the stone came in the court of Rasoolullah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم without sinking and testified about the Nubuwwah. The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم asked: ‘Is it enough?’ Ikramah replied: ‘This stone should return to its place.’ Therefore, that stone returned as ordered by the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. (Tafseer Kabeer, vol. 12, pp. 314)

A person’s dead daughter revived

A person said that he would believe in the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم on condition that his daughter become alive. So, the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم went to the grave and revived that person’s dead daughter. (Zurqaani ‘alal Muwahib, vol. 7, pp. 61)

Wood turned into sword

In the battle of Badr, sword of Sayyiduna ‘Ukaashah Bin Muhsin رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ broke. He came in the blessed court of Rasoolullah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and humbly mentioned his problem; so, the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم gave him a stick. When Sayyiduna ‘Ukaashah رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ held it in his hand and moved it, it turned into a white sword which was called “Awn”. He رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ participated in Jihad with that sword in his entire life and achieved victory. (As-Seerat-un-Nabawiyyah li Ibn Hishaam, pp. 263)

Appearing taller than all

When Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman Bin Zayd رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ was born, he had a very low height. He was brought in the blessed court of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم; so the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم put something into his mouth to eat [as is traditionally done so that the new-born baby will receive blessings], moved his hand [affectionately] over the head of Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman Bin Zayd رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ and made Du’a of blessing. It had such blessed effect that Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman Bin Zayd رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ would appear to be taller in a crowd. (Al-Isaabah, vol. 5, pp. 30)

The tree testified

The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has been blessed with such high status that not only living things but even non-living things obey him. Once the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was on a journey; a Bedouin came in the blessed court of Rasoolullah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, so he صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم invited him to Islam. That Bedouin asked: ‘Is there any witness [who testifies] about your Nubuwwah?’ The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم responded: ‘Yes! This tree which is at the corner of the plain will testify about my Nubuwwah.’ So, the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم ordered that tree to come to him. Surprisingly, that tree immediately moved from its place while tearing the land and came in the blessed court of Rasoolullah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم; thereafter, it testified thrice about the Nubuwwah of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم loudly. Thereafter, the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم gestured towards it; so that tree returned to its place. The Bedouin embraced Islam immediately after seeing this Mu’jizah and he also had the privilege of kissing the blessed hands and feet of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم with great devotion. (Zurqaani ‘alal Muwahib, vol. 6, pp. 517)

Mu’jizah that will exist till the Day of Judgement

The greatest Mu’jizah of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم is the Holy Quran because other Mu’jizaat of Rasoolullah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم happened at a certain time and only the people of the blessed era of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم saw those Mu’jizaat, but the “Holy Quran” is that Mu’jizah of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم which will exist until the Day of Judgement.
